PRESIDENT CLINTON ANNOUNCES LABOR CODE FOR APPAREL INDUSTRY

President Clinton urged U.S. apparel manufacturers
yesterday to implement a voluntary code of conduct that he
said "will improve the lives of millions of garment workers
around the world," according to Kathleen Kenna in the
TORONTO STAR. Nike Chair Phil Knight joined Clinton at a
White House ceremony to announce the code, which was created
by the Apparel Industry Partnership, a group of industry,
labor and human rights leaders. The code includes a cap on
work hours, guaranteed minimum wage and a ban on worker
abuse. Nike, Reebok and Patagonia are among companies
involved in the campaign (TORONTO STAR, 4/15).
