TONY KORNHEISER NOTES THE AFTERSHOCKS OF CLINTON ON THE IR

President Clinton's knee injury is examined in a
humorous column by Tony Kornheiser of the WASHINGTON POST.
Kornheiser: "I'll tell you what Clinton didn't trip over at
Greg Norman's house -- he didn't trip over a green jacket!"
Kornheiser writes in jest that photos of Clinton being
wheeled from the hospital "caused a minor stir," showing
Clinton wearing an adidas sweatsuit and New Balance running
shoes. Kornheiser notes that in facetious statement, adidas
said, "We're very proud and honored Mr. Clinton chose the
comfort of our clothing." Kornheiser adds that Nike, Reebok
and Fila declined to comment, "although there was a rumor
that to do damage control, Nike chairman Phil Knight has
flown to Bethesda Naval Center to affix swooshes on the
surgical masks of everyone involved in the Clinton
operation." Kornheiser adds a casual apparel industry
insider noted, "Clinton wearing adidas isn't that big a
deal. They may corner the 'fat white guy in a sweat suit'
market. But Nike still has Tiger Woods" (WASHINGTON POST,
3/18). Norman, on Clinton's fall on the steps of his FL
home: "There was nothing we could have done. It wasn't our
fault, but you feel guilty. You feel this emotional
draining of it all" (AP/NEWSDAY, 3/18).
