STADIUM NOTES

The TX Senate State Affairs Committee yesterday
approved a bill by TX Sen. John Whitmire that would allow
Houston and Harris County to impose new taxes for stadium
and arena construction. The bill now heads to the full
Senate. Whitmire said that after the Senate approves the
bill, "it will take a back seat" to a similar bill by TX
Rep. Kim Brimer. Whitmire said that he will push his bill
in the TX House only if Brimer's bill "bogs down" (HOUSTON
CHRONICLE, 3/14)...."In Akron, columnist Bob Dyer on
building a domed stadium for the Browns in Cleveland: "A
dome would be dumb. Simple as that. Is anybody building
domes these days? No" (AKRON BEACON JOURNAL, 3/14)....The
Alamodome will host the '97 Big 12 Conference championship
football game, and Builders Square Alamo Bowl officials will
organize the game locally (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 3/14).
