CHICAGO SUN-TIMES' RICK TELANDER EXAMINES RACE AND SPORTS

In a six-part series from Sunday through today,
columnist Rick Telander of the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES examined
race and sports. Telander: "In this, Black History Month,
1997, the 50th anniversary of second baseman [Jackie]
Robinson's integration of major league baseball, we find
     ourselves half-blinded, half-mesmerized, half-baffled, half-
terrified and completely overwhelmed by the collision of
sports and race" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 2/16). Telander, under
the header "Black Athletes Dominating Landscape": "The
dominance of black athletes in many sports that require
speed, jumping ability, power or quickness has become such
an ingrained -- yet largely unspoken -- aspect of modern
life that we can tolerate impersonal titles such as 'Play
That Funky Music (White Boy)' or 'White Men Can't Jump,' as
long as they bring a chuckle to our lips and not an epithet"
     (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 2/17).
