SUN DEVILS AND NIKE GETTING TOGETHER ON THAT UNIFORM THING?

Nike and Arizona State Univ. are "on the verge" of a
five-year deal that would outfit all ASU athletic teams and
"would be worth as much" as $1M annually in product and
cash," according to Jeff Metcalfe of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC.
ASU Assistant AD/Ops Tom Collins said that he "expects no
more than two bids" for the team and said that Nike is
"showing the most interest." Steve Miller, Nike Global Dir
of Sports Marketing, said any deal would take effect for the
'97-98 season. The REPUBLIC's Metcalfe reports that adidas,
which is "ready to announce" a five-year, $25M deal with
Notre Dame," may challenge Nike for ASU. Reebok "apparently
is not interested." Nike currently has 12 all-sport
contracts with Div. I-A universities. Nike's Miller said
the sports contract involves $500,000 to $1M annually in
cash and the same amount in product "based on retail cost."
ASU AD Kevin White said the breakdown "typically" is 70%
     product/30% cash (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 2/12).
