GOING OVER THE TRACK RECORD AT DAYTONA INT'L SPEEDWAY

Daytona International Speedway is profiled by Jon
Rabiroff of the Daytona DAILY-JOURNAL. Even "with a
sweetheart land deal that saves the Speedway big money in
potential taxes every year," the DIS is "an incredible
economic asset." A deal in the 1950s led to the
construction of DIS, and its tracks, buildings and
grandstands sit on about 70 acres owned by Daytona Beach
Racing and Rec. Facilities District, 375 acres owned by
Volusia County and 12 acres owned by the Int'l Speedway
Corp. Under terms of the district and county leases, which
expire in 2032 and 2054, respectively, the Speedway "only
pays $10,000 to rent the 445 acres it doesn't own" and
therefore pays no property taxes. It does pay taxes on its
12 acres, business equipment and other personal property,
with a taxable value of $9.5M. The Speedway paid more than
$225,000 in taxes in '96, making it the ninth largest
taxpayer in Daytona Beach (Daytona NEWS-JOURNAL, 2/13).
