TAGLIABUE SETS DEADLINE TO KEEP SUPER BOWL IN SAN DIEGO

NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue said that San Diego has
until the last week of February to settle its stadium
controversy or the '98 Super Bowl will be moved, probably to
Pasadena, according to Barry Bloom in the SAN DIEGO UNION-
TRIBUNE. Tagliabue said that if the $78M expansion of Jack
Murphy Stadium is halted, the league will have "no choice
but to move the game." L.A. Mayor Richard Riordan sent a
letter to Tagliabue offering the L.A. Coliseum, but Bloom
calls that option "not a likely venue for the game" (SAN
     DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 2/1). The UNION-TRIBUNE's Gerry Braun
examines the effects of the city's sports situation on San
Diego Mayor Susan Golding's desire to run for the U.S.
Senate. Braun: "The downside is steep indeed" (SAN DIEGO
UNION-TRIBUNE, 2/2). Columnist Tom Cushman, noting a bumper
sticker seen in the city: "Go Chargers, and Take the Padres
With You" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 2/2).
