West Hartford attorney WESLEY SPEARS was charged with
supplying the Raptors' MARCUS CAMBY, then at the Univ. of
MA, with prostitutes and threatening him in an "aggressive
but unsuccessful attempt to become his agent," according to
Altimari & Tuohy of the HARTFORD COURANT. Camby faces no
criminal charges (HARTFORD COURANT, 12/20). Spears
allegedly took photographs of Camby in "compromising
positions" so that he could threaten to "damage Camby's
reputation, ... and hinder his ability to land endorsements
if he did not sign with Spears (Kevin Cullen, BOSTON GLOBE,
12/20). Camby is a client of ProServ (Carol Burns, N.Y.
TIMES, 12/20). Camby: "I didn't do anything, so I'll just
go about clearing up my name" (Mary Ormsby, TORONTO STAR,
12/20). In Toronto, under the header, "Shadows of Doubt
Surround Camby," Craig Daniels writes, "Maybe Marcus Camby
is the unfortunate victim of bad folks bent on taking
advantage of him. ... Maybe there's nothing beneath the
surface of Marcus Camby's life to find. But there sure are
a lot of questions" (TORONTO SUN, 12/20).
