MA GOV. WELD PUTS NEW STADIUM SITE IN PATS KRAFT STOCKING

MA Gov. William Weld said yesterday the state may offer
Patriots Owner Robert Kraft's property in the South Bay
section of Boston for a new stadium, according to Cassidy &
Vaillancourt in the BOSTON GLOBE. Weld: "It may be that
contributing land to the resolution of the stadium would be
less objectionable to some in the Legislature than offering
general obligation bonds, which some feel detracts from
other state capital projects." This came after Kraft and
his son, Jonathan, "were clearly rebuffed" after a City Hall
meeting where they tried to "sway" members of the South
Boston. City Council President James Kelly: "We will
never, ever support a football stadium in South Boston. ...
We are adamantly opposed and we will not be willing to even
further discuss the idea." Weld denied that was "directing"
Kraft to South Boston: "I'm not telling anyone to go
     anywhere" (BOSTON GLOBE, 12/20).
