STADIUM NOTES

In Charlotte, public financing of new arenas is
profiled in the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER in the aftermath of the
city's plan to build a $192M arena for the Hornets. A study
by Coopers and Lybrand of 11 arenas built since '90 found
that, on average, taxpayers covered 30% of the cost.
(CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 12/8)....The Heat have tabbed Miami-
based architectural firm, Arquitectonica, as the lead
architect to design the proposed $165M Miami arena (Heat).
The Heat and Leisure Management, half-owned by Wayne
Huizenga and managers of the Miami Arena, "will wage a last-
minute battle" in the summer of '98 over terms that would
allow the Heat to stay at the Arena for a few months until
their new arena opens. The MIAMI HERALD's Barry Jackson
notes, "Don't be shocked if the Heat threatens to start the
'98 season in another city" (MIAMI HERALD, 12/8).
