S.F. MAYOR LOOKS TO INCREASE STAFF TO STUDY NEW STADIUM

San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown has requested a
$517,000 supplemental appropriation from the city's Board of
Supervisors for more research on building a replacement for
Candlestick Park for the 49ers, according to Edward Epstein
of the S.F. CHRONICLE. The funds would allow Brown to hire
three temporary staff members and outside consultants,
mainly to conduct preliminary environmental studies of the
site. As plans for a new stadium call for construction to
take place while the old stadium is in use, more land
"might" be needed for parking and a component of the new
facility "seems to be a retail development at the site,
meaning even more land would have to be acquired." The
"major" part of the $517,000 appropriation would go towards
outside consultants, with an "estimated" $250,000 of that
amount going for environmental review work. The
supervisors' budget committee will take up the request on
     Wednesday (S.F. CHRONICLE, 12/7).
