NAME IN THE NEWS

When NASCAR legend RICHARD PETTY announced his run for NC
Secretary of State, other NC GOPers "cheered" his entry and hoped
his popularity would "sweep other party loyalists into office."
Now some Republican voters and candidates are wondering whether
Petty, currently trailing in the polls, has relied too much on
his celebrity status. According to long-time Republican Ben
Horack: "I'm not voting for a legend; I'm voting for a secretary
of state. I'm just unimpressed by Mr. Petty's background and
credentials for the job" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 10/31).
