NAMES IN THE NEWS

     GQ will release its "Men of the Year" list, who will be
celebrated at Radio City Music Hall next Monday.  Among the list:
PAT RILEY, BILL GATES and MICHAEL JORDAN.  Jordan will join MEL
GIBSON and JERRY SEINFELD on GQ's next cover (NEWSDAY,
10/23)....A staff luncheon for SI's outgoing Managing Editor MARK
MULVOY was held Friday in New York where Mulvoy was presented
with the exact seat he sat in at the U.S. Olympic Hockey Team's
"Miracle on Ice" in '80.  The presentation was made via videotape
by team captain MIKE ERUZIONE.  Mulvoy had identified the seat
number in his farewell "Point After," and after reading the
article, an official at the Lake Placid arena offered it to
Mulvoy as a gift (SI)....Olympic Gold Medal Gymnasts SHANNON
MILLER, AMY CHOW, AMANDA BORDEN, JAYCIE PHELPS, DOMINIQUE DAWES,
and DOMINIQUE MOCEANU were profiled in the N.Y. TIMES MAGAZINE.
SHERYL SHADE who is the agent for Phelps, Borden and Miller says
the girls would love a Nike deal, "To them, that's the epitome of
endorsement" (N.Y. TIMES MAGAZINE, 10/20). ...CHARLES BARKLEY, on
the NBA's 50th anniversary: "The NBA turns 50 this year. ...
That's a great trivia question: Who's older?  CLYDE DREXLER or
the NBA?  Fifty years.  That's the average age of the Houston
Rockets" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 10/23).
