NEW BID ON THE BLOCK FOR THE BLUE JAYS?

Associates of Barry Sherman, head of a Canadian generic drug
company Apotex, are "making a bid" to buy the Blue Jays,
according to Marina Strauss of the Toronto GLOBE & MAIL. Sources
close to the talks say Stephen Mernick, an associate of Sherman's
at Apotex, has discussed a bid, "going so far as to discuss
dollar values." Sherman said he is "not involved personally in
talks to buy" the club, but that one of his associates is
"pursuing a bid." Recent reports have Toronto-based real-estate
developer Murray Frum and merchant banker Penfund Management
preparing separate bids for the team. Strauss notes a sale "will
probably not make much headway until an agreement" is reached on
a new CBA with the MLPA (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 8/22).
