The IOC's "biggest lesson" from Atlanta was never again to
award a Games without having costs underwritten by the host city,
according to the BOSTON GLOBE. John Powers writes that Sydney
will be "decidedly different" -- "publicly funded, less
commercial, more compact, and with fewer spectators and cooler
water" (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/11).
U.S. HOPEFULS: In the wake of Atlanta, a Deseret News/ KSL
poll shows "more than three quarters" of Utahns agreed it is
still worth hosting the Games (DESERET NEWS, 8/11).... San Diego
Int'l Sports Council Exec Dir Ky Snyder: "We're in an
information gathering stage" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 8/6)....A
N.Y. DAILY NEWS editorial: "There's no reason this town could
not also be the world's sports capital in 2008" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS
8/12)....John Powers on Boston 2008: "With the city and state not
even able to agree on a simple convention center, the odds of
them guaranteeing an event with a price tag that will top $2
billion by then are long" (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/11). The Boston
Organizing Committee cites an MIT study that says Boston could
handle the traffic. John Hancock Senior VP David D'Allesandro,
who argues against a Boston bid: "Atlanta had a similar study,
and it was at least as glowing" (Mark Murphy, BOSTON HERALD,
8/11).
