TURNSTILES: MARLIN FEVER? YANKEES, WHITE SOX TOUGH DRAW

The Marlins drew 105,636 for this weekend's series against
the Braves, marking the first time this year the team has drawn
more than 100,000 for a three-game series. The attendance was
the best at Joe Robbie since May '94 against the Cardinals (Mike
Phillips, MIAMI HERALD, 7/1). The Marlins sold out Saturday's
game, marking only the third time in two seasons they've
announced a sellout (PALM BEACH POST, 6/30)....Even with two
crowds over 40,000 this weekend against the 2nd place Orioles,
Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner voiced his opinion "about what
he believes is disappointing attendance." Steinbrenner: "Right
after this series, you'll see a fall off. That's what really
gets me. We should be doing thirty to forty thousand a game.
This is New York, a city of 8.5 million people" (NEWSDAY,
6/30).... In Chicago, Jay Mariotti calls it "pathetic" that the
White Sox sold out only "one of four games" against the Indians.
He notes, "More than anything, fans are rebelling against the
Ballmall (new Comiskey Park), which has regressed into such an
albatross and white elephant that Mayor Daley has joined the list
of critics" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 6/30).
