FRANCHISE NOTES

Sources indicate the 76ers "will not be directly involved"
in the eight-team Women's NBA. One source: "They're going to
take a pass. There's just too much going on with the Sixers
right now for them to be involved in some new enterprise" (PHILA.
DAILY NEWS, 7/1). Columnist Bill Lyon notes the 76ers are
"suddenly the talk of Philadelphia" with the Phillies struggling,
the Flyers "flopped," and Eagles Owner Jeffrey Lurie's "ill-timed
and thinly veiled extortion threats about a new stadium"
(PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 6/30)....In New York, Larry Brooks
wonders if Islanders officials will open their books to explain
"how the team lost" $12M over two years with $10M per year coming
from SportsChannel (N.Y. POST, 6/30)....The Nuggets are
increasing ticket prices 9.7% for next season. The average will
rise from $26.02 to $28.54. Tickets will range from $10.56 to
$180 (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, 6/28)....The Colts have seen only a
"modest bump" in season ticket sales despite their strong season
last year. Their current base of 34,800 "ranks near the bottom"
of the NFL. Colts GM Jim Irsay: "We are really trying to
increase our presence and our community involvement"
(INDIANAPOLIS STAR-NEWS, 6/29)....Chargers Owner Alex Spanos: "I
don't understand the people of Chicago. They don't even realize
how lucky they are to have someone like Jerry Reinsdorf" (CHICAGO
TRIBUNE, 6/30)....The Pawtucket Red Sox and the state of RI will
team to pay for $10M in renovations at McCoy Stadium that will
reportedly allow the team to stay (PROVIDENCE JOURNAL BULLETIN,
6/30). ....Vikings QB Warren Moon, on life after football: "I
really want to get into ownership. The commissioner knows my
feelings as far as wanting to get involved in ownership and so
does my attorney and my marketing people. So we're out there
looking around for different groups and seeing when the right
possibilities for me to be involved with a group to own a team
would be" ("Up Close," ESPN, 6/28).
