EXPECTATIONS LOW FOR DELAYED PA TASK-FORCE REPORT

Eagles and Phillies officials are "not optimistic" that a
Sports and Exposition Facilities Task Force report commissioned
by PA Gov. Tom Ridge will recommend the state pay "for even" 50%
of the cost of new stadiums, according to the PHILADELPHIA
INQUIRER. However, Michael Sokolove writes the report, the
release date of which has been delayed until August 1, is likely
to suggest a state-run stadium authority be created to assist
with building issues. One member of the Phillies' front office
predicted "disappointment": "Anything less than 50 percent
participation by the state and you can probably forget about a
new baseball park. It will be impossible." A source connected
with the Eagles said the task force is looking for "less, not
more." Task Force member William Green: "We're not like
Maryland, which is basically a one-city state. In Pennsylvania,
it is very difficult to do something for one community and not do
something comparable in others" (PHILA. INQUIRER, 6/30).
