GOLF NEWS: SPALDING EXPECTED TO ANNOUNCE PURCHASE OF ETONIC

     Spalding Sports Worldwide is expected to announce the
purchase of MA-based Etonic Shoe Co., according to the BOSTON
GLOBE.  Spalding Golf Division head Scott Creelamn said at a
company meeting this week that the purchase of a "golf-related
company" will be completed in approximately two weeks (Paul
Harber, BOSTON GLOBE, 6/27)....American Express has announced it
will retain title sponsorship rights and benefits of the American
Express Invitational Senior PGA Tour event through 2001.  The
Sarasota, FL-based tour stop is presented by Business Week.  The
new contract calls for increasing the purse to $1.2M, making it
among the richest events on the Senior Tour (American
Express)....NY, NJ, CT Volvo Retailers and Quadrax Corp., a RI-
based sports equipment maker, have teamed up for the '96 Volvo
Hole in One Charity Challenge, in which tri-state Volvo retailers
will provide a car as a hole-in-one prize to three local charity
golf tournaments this summer.  Where no aces are scored, the
"Closest to the Pin" winner gets a custom Quad Force putter from
Quadrax, a $50 pro shop certificate and a chance to participate
in the Volvo Hole In One Charity Shoot-Out in September
(Silverman Media & Marketing).
