NBC'S CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND: U.S. OPEN, BULLS PROVIDE DRAMA

NBC received all positive reviews for the network's coverage
of the U.S. Open's final round and the NBA Finals' Game 6 in
which the Bulls won their fourth championship in six years. In
Chicago, Michael Hirsley writes the teams and NBC all "had high
moments of emotion, power and sheer artistry" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE,
6/17). USA TODAY's Rudy Martzke writes, "The mantle for TV
sports coverage has been grabbed by, or fallen to, NBC, depending
on one's perspective" (USA TODAY, 6/17). In Toronto, Rob Longley
writes, "If U.S. Open coverage was any indication, NBC may have
finally passed CBS as the top golf network" (TORONTO SUN, 6/17).
EXTRA CHANGE: The WASHINGTON POST estimated NBC would make
an additional $10M for the "unexpected" Game 5, and, presumably,
the same for Game 6 (WASHINGTON POST, 6/15).
SUCKER BORN EVERY MINUTE: Dennis Rodman did his postgame
interviews sucking on a "Worm" lollipop with his likeness on it.
Rodman, on having to go to Game 6: "The NBA and NBC made a lot
of money last week. No one should be sad or unhappy" (Armour &
Smith, CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 6/17).
NOW, IT'S ON TO ATLANTA: The NBC Sports team covering the
Olympics will be outfitted in clothing by Eddie Bauer, and most
of the clothes will be available in Eddie Bauer stores (SAN JOSE
MERCURY NEWS, 6/16).
