EAGLES WILL RETAIN COUNSELOR TO COORDINATE PLAYER PROGRAMS

     The Eagles are set to hire a former NFL player to act as a
"liaison" between players and management and serve as a counselor
to help players deal with on- and off-the-field problems,
according to the PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER.  Candidates include
former Chargers CB Gill Byrd and former Eagles Ray Ellis and
Wilbert Montgomery.  The job would include coordinating programs
on continuing education, family assistance, counseling, financial
planning and off-season job training.  Eagles Dir of Football
Operations Dick Daniels:  "You need someone who has had some
traumas in their life and can relate to that and what another
player is going through and also have some compassion for that
player."  Former players holding such positions include:  the
Falcons' Billy "White Shoes" Johnson and the Panthers' Donnie
Shell (Tim Panaccio, PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 6/16).
