SURVEY SHOWS SERNA'S SACRAMENTO STADIUM STRATEGY SUPPORTED

Most people in the Sacramento area back Mayor Joe Serna's
plan to build a MLB ballpark -- as long as the project does not
involve extra taxes, according to a SACRAMENTO BEE telephone
survey. The poll, which questioned 421 residents in the greater
Sacramento area, shows 57% support the plan, 31% oppose it and
12% do not have an opinion. Only 27% said they would still
embrace the proposal if building the facility involves a tax
increase. Serna said he intends to finance the stadium through
revenue bonds and will not suggest any general tax money or
property taxes be used. However, he is willing to explore other
forms of tax revenue, including a sales or hotel tax. As for the
potential location of the ballpark, 55% of those surveyed favor a
vacant site next to Arco Arena in North Natomas, as opposed to a
downtown location presented by Serna. Most surveyed don't want
ground broken for a stadium until a team commits to the city
(Tony Bizjak, SACRAMENTO BEE, 5/30).
