NHL DEFUSES LETTER BOMB: LOCAL STITCHERS CUT IN ON BIZ

The NHL plans to utilize local lettering houses to help
handle the demand for player name jerseys, and hopes to have a
network of five regional letterers in place by next season,
according to SPORTING GOODS BUSINESS. The league hopes this will
allow retailers to phone in special orders for players not in
stock, and have deliveries within 48 hours. Official jersey
suppliers CCM, Starter and Nike will continue to handle advance
orders for star players, but the regional letterers will stitch
the names of lesser-known players on demand (SPORTING GOODS
BUSINESS, 5/96 issue).
