AND THE SURVEY SAYS: SPORTS PARTICIPATION DOWN IN '95

     Sports participation went down in '95, leading analysts to
conclude that economic conditions may impact sports at the
recreational level, not just at retail, according to SPORTING
GOODS BUSINESS.  A study of more than 17,000 U.S. households
conducted by American Sports Data found that fewer people
participated in 38 sports and activities last year, while the
participation numbers increased for just 16 sports.  Selected
gainers and losers in '95, according to America Sports Data (SGB,
5/96 issue):
