PRELIMINARY INSPECTION YIELDS NO COLISEUM CRACKS

The engineer and inspection firm who oversaw the original
construction of the L.A. Coliseum announced that spectators
should have no concerns about sitting beneath the press box built
last year, according to David William of the L.A. TIMES. Smith
Emery Co. President James Partridge said although no visible
cracks were detected, the results of ultrasound tests are not yet
available and more tests will be conducted this week. The press
box's welds have been scrutinized in response to a TIMES' article
that reported on weaknesses in the welds discovered during
construction. But the re-inspection of the press box has not
satisfied everyone. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky: "They
all have a stake in this, both professionally and public safety-
wise" Don Webb, the architect who oversaw construction,
criticized the TIMES' article for spreading unnecessary alarm:
"We are faced with the task of disproving there is a fire in the
theater (L.A. TIMES, 5/10).
