FOX GETS EVEN YOUNGER, FILLIPELLI DENIES DISRESPECT

Josh Lewin, in only his second season as a play-by-play
voice for the Orioles on WBAL-AM, will join Fox's MLB team doing
play-by-play alongside analyst Ken Singleton. John Fillipelli,
Fox Senior Coordinating Producer for Baseball, said Lewin, 27,
is considered "part of the next wave of outstanding, young
baseball talent" (Fox Sports). Fillipelli told the Baltimore
SUN: "I guarantee you that this kid in 20 years will be one of
the great announcers in our business. We hope it's sooner." On
Fox Sports President David Hill's suggestion that on-air talent
should avoid the mention of "dead guys," Fillipelli stressed that
Hill meant, "Build on the present. Respect the past and honor
it, but you're not going to get to the future by dwelling on the
past" (Milton Kent, Baltimore SUN, 5/9). Singleton, on Hill's
statement: "He doesn't know. He doesn't understand." In
Montreal, Pat Hickey writes, "Fox and baseball are working hand-
in-hand to win fans back to this game but turning their backs on
history isn't the way to do it" (MONTREAL GAZETTE, 5/9).
