Both the AHL and IHL are keeping a close eye on the Whalers
campaign to sell 11,000 season tickets, which is just shy of
8,000 with a week to go. According to Michael Arace of the
HARTFORD COURANT, AHL President Dave Andrews and IHL commissioner
Bob Ufer said yesterday they are interested in placing teams in
Hartford should the Whalers leave, but neither wanted to make a
move that would disrupt the team's campaign (HARTFORD COURANT,
5/9).
AHL MOVES: At the AHL spring meeting in Boston, the
following moves were approved: the Oilers' transfer of Cape
Breton to Copps Coliseum in Hamilton; the Senators' request to
suspend operations of the Charlottetown, PEI, team; the sale of
the Avalanche-owned Cornwall franchise to Penguins Owner Howard
Baldwin. An application for an expansion franchise in New Haven,
CT, was withdrawn (AHL)
TIGER TALK: A name-the-team contest is to be unveiled today
for Hamilton's new AHL team. Steve Milton of the Hamilton
SPECTATOR writes there is already sentiment for "Tigers" -- the
name of the NHL team that left 70 years ago to become the New
York Americans (Hamilton SPECTATOR, 5/9).
