VA LEGISLATURE TO HEAR TAXING PROPOSALS FOR NEW BALLPARK

VA legislators will be offered up to "a dozen" alternatives
for taxing Northern Virginians to help pay for a new baseball
stadium in a study presented today by Stafford Sports Ventures
and Government Finance Group. An advance copy, obtained by the
WASHINGTON POST, notes options include levies on cigarettes,
hotel, room, restaurant meals, wine and liquor. This will be the
"first detailed glimpse" of possible revenue options as stadium
backers "step up" the campaign for public help to fund the $250M
venture. Some officials reportedly want "to take a closer look"
at the financing recently approved in San Francisco for the new
Giants ballpark at China Basin (WASHINGTON POST, 4/22).
