ESPN INTRODUCES NEW SPORTS BUSINESS SEGMENT

     ESPN's Bob Ley introduced a new feature last night on
"SportsCenter" called "Dollars & Sports." The opening segment
reviewed the study which showed Penny Hardaway is more popular
among teenagers than Michael Jordan. Ley: "For Hardaway, who
was 16th in the survey last year, and who is 10 years younger
than Michael, it is a serious boost to an already burgeoning
commercial career." Other subjects: The Dennis Rodman Kennedy
Expressway mural and his hot selling tatoo T-shirt; MLB '96 club
payrolls; the fact the Mariners lost $20M last year despite the
club's on-field success; President Clinton mentioning the
Griffey-Nike campaign; the Angels signing three young players to
long-term contracts as soon as the Disney deal was done; the
added attraction of a year-end LPGA Tour Championship for the
Tour's top 30 winners; the naming of the Baltimore NFL franchise;
and the Whalers urgent attempt to attract new season ticket
holders ("SportsCenter," ESPN, 4/10).
