A "blockbuster" deal between Comcast and the Phillies that
would "clear the way" for a new baseball-only stadium could be
announced soon, according to the PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS. An
unnamed source close to the situation: "Something is cooking on
the stadium front. There could be further communication on that
scene pending, possibly as early as this week." Dr. Michael
Jackson, a member of the commission appointed by PA Gov. Tom
Ridge to explore new stadium options in Philadelphia and
Pittsburgh: "One of the things Comcast is looking at right now
is the right to broadcast the Phillies in exchange for a stadium,
but nothing has gone down the pike." Jackson added that Comcast
is still in the process of establishing the value of the air
rights to the club's games (Hagen & Moran, PHILADELPHIA DAILY
NEWS, 4/10).
BANISHED ON BROAD STREET: Despite an expected capacity
increase of 2,120 at the CoreStates Center next season, the
chances of getting individual-game Flyers tickets have decreased,
according to the DAILY NEWS. Edward Moran reports that due to
the potential sell-out of season tickets and a larger number of
premium seats, the new arena will actually have fewer seats
available to the general public than the CoreStates Spectrum
(PHILA. DAILY NEWS, 4/10).
