BRONCOS PUSH FOR CREATION OF NEW STADIUM AUTHORITY

The Broncos have proposed legislation to create a new
stadium authority in Denver's six-county metro area with a plan
that would allow legislators "some distance from the politically
contentious issue" of raising taxes to fund a new stadium. This
morning's DENVER POST reports the plan would create an authority
separate from the one overseeing the 0.1% sales tax funding Coors
Field construction. The Broncos hope to call a special election
for May '97 for a football stadium authority that would recreate
the 0.1% sales tax, funding a new $240M stadium once Coors Field
is paid off. The CO Legislature must approve any special
election, and sources tell the POST such a bill will be
introduced within the next week. Broncos Owner Pat Bowlen says
he would like a May election, preferring to avoid a November vote
during the season, in case the team is having a bad year. The
proposal will include provide for the six contributing counties
to share revenues, regardless of where the stadium is located
(Steve Lipsher, DENVER POST, 4/10).
