TEAMS BEGIN CROSSING LINES IN CART- IRL BATTLE

For the first time since the CART/IRL split, a team will
cross the line this weekend in Long Beach. IRL driver Richie
Hearn will enter CART's Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. Hearn,
saying he has received no hostile reactions from other CART
drivers: "There's nothing wrong with what we're doing. The IRL
has created a situation for a lot of drivers who wouldn't be in
Indy Cars if it wasn't for the IRL." Hearn's major sponsors are
Fuji Film and Goodyear ("SportsCenter," ESPN, 4/8). ESPN's John
Kernan also reports at least two CART teams will also send teams
to the Indy 500 ("SportsCenter," ESPN, 4/8). In L.A., Shav Glick
examines the feud, noting the split "has widened, probably to the
point of no return." Glick reports a "strong possibility" the
'97 U.S. 500 will be run at Roger Penske's to-be-built Fontana
Speedway in CA (L.A. TIMES, 4/7).
