BREWERS GAIN FIRST LOAN GUARANTEE COMMITMENT

The Brewers received a commitment by the Marcus Corp. to
guarantee part of a $35-40M loan the team hopes to obtain from
NationsBank in order to help finance its new stadium, according
to this morning's MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL. Marcus CFO Kenneth
MacKenzie: "It's good for the community and it's good for the
Marcus Corp., specifically the hotel business." As earlier
reported, the club's "scramble" to find loan guarantors was set
off by the newly formed Stadium Authority, which gave the Brewers
a March 22 deadline to produce the team's $90M contribution to
the facility (Kenneth Lamke, MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 3/15).
POLL NUMBERS: A statewide poll conducted by Market Shares
Corp. (800 registered voters -- 500 from Milwaukee County and 300
from outstate -- were surveyed March 7-10) shows 56% do not think
the Brewers are "willing to assume enough financial
responsibility" for stadium construction. Sixty percent of those
surveyed also disapprove of any public funds being used to build
the facility (THE DAILY).
