LEAGUE NOTES

     Paul Johnson, a former middleweight, Roy Foreman, brother of
George, and Irv Abramson, a former official with the New York
State Athletic Commission, are on a campaign to unionize boxers.
The Boxing Organizing Committee has support from the NFLPA, the
UAW and the AFL-CIO.  Johnson expects to announce details of a
pension plan soon, backed by donations from top fighters.
Johnson mentioned George Foreman's last fight as a good time to
sign a union charter (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 2/28)....IndyCar
President Andrew Craig, on a recent compromise bid by IRL and
CART members who have spoken with IRL President Tony George:
"They have come back and said, 'You're right, we can't find a
solution.' ... I think it would be very, very unlikely that we
would not have the U.S. 500" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER,
2/27)....The Springfield, MA, city council has approved the
Basketball Hall of Fame's $80M expansion plans.  The state now
takes up the issue of funding (USA TODAY, 2/28).
