MLB NEWS & NOTES: SPRING IS NEAR AND ALL IS WELL

In Milwaukee, Tom Haudricourt writes, "A year ago, [MLB]
found itself on the critical list in the intensive care unit
because of self-inflicted wounds. There are signs, however, that
the patient has been transferred to the recovery room this
spring." Acting MLB Commissioner Bud Selig: "The mood is good.
I think we're in the early stages of a very powerful recovery."
For the most part, Haudricourt notes, ticket sales are "booming"
in AZ and FL (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 2/17). In Atlanta, Tim
Tucker writes from the opening of Braves camp: "Not to ruin the
moment, but this distinction should be made: Baseball has quit
talking about its problems. It has not solved them. Big
difference" (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 2/19).
