HIGHWAY FUNDING MAY HOLD KEY TO STADIUMS FOR COOKE, MODELL

In a move that "could help break an impasse" on how to fund
the $73M needed for Redskins Owner Jack Kent Cooke's proposed new
stadium in Landover, MD legislative leaders reached a tentative
agreement to shift more highway funding to the DC suburbs. That
"could clear the way" for Assembly approval for both the Cooke
project and Art Modell's new $200M Baltimore stadium, according
to Charles Babington in the WASHINGTON POST. Assembly leaders
still want Modell to pick up $25M of his stadium's cost, with one
proposal calling for that funding to come from naming rights
(WASHINGTON POST, 2/17). In Annapolis yesterday, the first
public hearing on the Redskins stadium was held. Cooke chartered
six busses to haul supporters to the MD Capitol for the hearing.
The POST estimates that over 100 people turned out opposing the
project (WASHINGTON POST, 2/20).
BASEBALL BACK IN DC? The two leading groups trying to bring
MLB back to the Washington area have been asked by the DC Sports
Commission to help pay for "feasibility studies," which would
examine the long-term use of RFK Stadium for baseball and explore
the possibility for a new D.C. stadium (WASHINGTON TIMES, 2/17).
