SPORTMART TO CLOSE SIX STORES, INCLUDING MPLS, CHICAGO SITES

     Sportmart Inc. announced yesterday it will close six stores
nationwide, including stores in downtown Chicago and the Mall of
America.  The IL-based retailer said quarterly sales in stores
open for more than a year will fall about 1.5% from last year's
levels.  Sportmart said they "were hurt by lower-than-expected
sales" in nine Canadian outlets opened last year and
"disappointing sales" of ski-related merchandise.  Also cited was
extensive holiday promotion spending that resulted in "lower
overall gross margins" in the latest quarter (Minneapolis STAR-
TRIBUNE, 1/26).
