TIES THAT BIND: NORTH AND SOUTH KOREA TOGETHER FOR SOCCER?

A spokesperson for South Korea's Football Association
yesterday said that North Korea has asked FIFA for "working
advice" on a plan to host the 2002 World Cup jointly with South
Korea. In a letter faxed to FIFA General Secretary Joseph
Blatter, North Korea Football Association General Secretary Ri
Chang Soon said the country wanted to host World Cup 2002 and
would seek "any other ways and means to this end." Upon hearing
North Korea's proposal, South Korea Football Association
Secretary Chung Mong Joon said co-hosting the event would made
South Korea a stronger candidate than Japan. The 21-member FIFA
Exec Committee is scheduled to make a decision June 1 (KYODO
NEWS, 1/24).
