ORIOLES CASH IN THEIR "PARITY" CHIP WITH THE STATE

Orioles Owner Peter Angelos yesterday told MD. Gov. Parris
Glendening that he is entitled to benefits comparable to those
being offered the Browns, according to the WASHINGTON POST. In a
five-page letter delivered yesterday to Glendening, Angelos said
a "parity clause" in the Orioles' contract with the state
requires "significant adjustments" in numerous areas. Those
include a state-built training facility and more private suites
at Camden Yards, and better deals on rent, parking and
concessions. State Sen. Christopher Van Hollen said if the O's
demands are met, it could amount to "millions and millions of
dollars to taxpayers." Glendening spokesperson Frederick
Puddester said the administration is taking Angelos' letter
seriously (Charles Babington, WASHINGTON POST, 1/24). Maryland
Stadium Authority Chair John Moag: "If he really wants it, we'll
give him the Browns deal. But probably the best thing to do is
to go to arbitration." Angelos agreed on the idea of a third
party (John Mercurio, WASHINGTON TIMES, 1/24).
