OLYMPIC NEWS AND NOTES

     A record 11 cities met yesterday's deadline to submit bids
for the 2004 Summer Games.  The candidates: Athens; Buenos Aires;
Cape Town; Istanbul; Rio de Janeiro; Rome; San Juan; Stockholm;
St. Petersburg, Russia; Seville, Spain; and Lille, France.  The
IOC will choose the host city in September '97 (AP/ N.Y. TIMES,
1/11)....Despite the fact that Asia contains 43 Olympic member
countries and 56.6% of the world's population, no Asian city bid
for 2004 -- and only Osaka has signaled it will bid for 2008
(KYODO, 1/11).
