SOLDIER FIELD REINCARNATED?

     A week after Chicago Bears President Michael McCaskey
declared "Soldier Field is dead," the club has apparently
contacted City Hall about the city's plan to refurbish the 71-
year-old stadium.  Such contact prompted IL Gov.  Jim Edgar to
take plans for a new dome off the table in hopes it would not be
used as leverage by the Bears to get a better deal from the city
(Rick Pearson, CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 12/29).  Meanwhile in Gary, IN,
newly elected Mayor Scott King continues to lobby hard for the
passage of a half percent income tax to lure the Bears across the
state line (Ellen Christian, CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 1/3).
