USOC ETHICS DEBATE NOT OVER AS MEMBERS REFUSE TO RESIGN

     Two members of the USOC's nominating committee "are
resisting an ethics panel's recommendation that they resign,"
according to Dodd & Allen of USA TODAY.  On Tuesday, the USOC
Ethics Oversight Committee recommended that USA Basketball's
Warren Brown and International Softball Federation's Don Porter
step down from the committee to ensure "the process was viewed as
'fair and unflawed.'"  The committee leveled no charges against
the two but made the request as part of a probe into "conflict-
of-interest questions in the race for the next USOC President."
Porter said yesterday he will not quit, and "indications are
Brown also is reluctant to step aside."  The issue "probably
won't be resolved" until the USOC Exec Committee meets January
20.  Bill Hybl, currently the leading candidate to become next
USOC President, was head of the El Pomar Foundation scrutinized
for grants to USA Basketball and free office space to
international softball.  Hybl has since removed the offers (USA
TODAY, 12/21).
