GIANTS CLOSE TO UNVEILING NEW STADIUM PROPOSAL

According to a KNBR-AM report cited on "SportsCenter" and
the S.F. EXAMINER, the Giants will unveil a new stadium proposal
Thursday. S.F. Board Supervisor Carole Migden said the team
intends to pursue a ballot measure in March to construct a
stadium in the China Basin area, "which would be entirely
privately financed." The Giants, who saw voters reject ballot
measures in '87 and '89 for publicly-backed stadiums, must
convince at least four supervisors to submit the proposal for the
ballot by December 27. S.F. Mayor-elect Willie Brown said he
would support a privately financed downtown stadium, and state
Sen. Quentin Kopp, a past opponent of previous plans, said, "It
looks feasible, and it looks desirable and in the public
interest" (Gordon, Brazil & Walsh, S.F. EXAMINER, 12/19).
Noting the KNBR report, ESPN's Karl Ravech said the Giants "went
the way of the Mariners -- keep the big-name players and
hopefully get a new stadium" ("SportCenter," 12/19).
