BILL PASSED IN CANADA; COULD END SI'S CANADIAN EDITIONS

     A bill "that effectively blocks" Canadian editions of Sports
Illustrated passed in Parliament Friday and will become law.  The
bill was approved without amendment in the Senate, despite
lobbying efforts by Time Warner to block it.  The bill will
impose an 80% tax on Canadian editions of foreign magazines that
carry Canadian advertising with editorial content made up "almost
entirely from its foreign parent."  SI's Canadian editions have
close to C$2.7M a year in Canadian advertising (REUTERS/DAILY
VARIETY, 12/18).  SI officials said they will review "all
possible legal options and consult with the U.S. government on
how best to respond" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 12/18).
