EXPOSING THE WORKINGS OF THE EAGELSON EMPIRE

MACLEAN's magazine profiles LAWRENCE EAGLE-TRIBUNE sports
editor RUSS CONWAY's expose on former NHLPA Exec Dir ALAN
EAGELSON, who is currently under investigation by U.S. and
Canadian authorities and faces, along with the NHL and 22 of its
teams, a lawsuit filed by five former players. Conway's Toronto
publisher, Macfarlane, Walter & Ross, has not publicized the
book, "Game Misconduct: Alan Eagelson and the Corruption of
Hockey," for fear of attracting an injunction from Eagelson's
lawyers. The book alleges, among other things, that Eagelson
kept the revenue from sale of end-board signage during the '91
Canada Cup by telling both Labatt's (which had retained
promotional rights to the event for C$42M) and the IIHF that each
other party had retained those rights. Conway alleges Eagelson
sold the advertising himself to separate sponsors. BRIAN
GREENSPAN, Eagleson's attorney, attacks the credibility of
Conway's sources, particularly BOBBY ORR. Greenspan:
"Unfortunately, a lot of people are trying to rewrite history. A
great deal of this stuff is fantasy" (D'Arcy Jenish, MACLEAN'S,
11/27).
