MARYLAND GOVERNOR SAYS NO DICE TO STALLIONS DEMANDS

In the aftermath of his team's CFL championship, Baltimore
Stallions Owner Jim Speros "asked for some financial support from
the state, but got little more than moral support" from MD Gov.
Parris Glendening, according to today's Baltimore SUN. Speros
hoped the state would guarantee minimum attendance next year, and
"at the least," pick up "some or all of the $400,000 a year his
team spends on operation costs at Memorial Stadium." But
Glendening told Speros there "was not much financially the state
could do" (John Frece, Baltimore SUN, 11/22). John Eisenberg
writes the Stallions "deserve a home," but adds that it is "hard
to feel sorry for" Speros, who took great advantage of the
"absence of the NFL" (Baltimore SUN, 11/22).
CFL NEWS & NOTES: The Grey Cup in Regina netted the Rough
Riders a C$1.3M profit, enough to "eliminate about two-thirds of
the club's C$2.1 million deficit" (TORONTO STAR, 11/22)....Orca
Bay Chair Arthur Griffiths said his group is not interested in
adding the CFL's B.C. Lions. Lions Owner Bill Comrie said he
would like to sell the team to Orca Bay because "they have the
marketing expertise and they know the Vancouver market"
(VANCOUVER SUN, 11/22).
