NO WEEKEND PROGRESS IN NBA-REFEREE TALKS

Negotiators for the National Basketball Referees Association
remained in New York on Friday, "but talks with the league
remained at an impasse," according to the N.Y. TIMES. The two
sides did not meet face-to-face Friday and have not scheduled a
next meeting (N.Y. TIMES, 11/18). USA TODAY's David Dupree: "The
trouble now with the officials is there may be some division in
their ranks." Dupree, who noted the two-man replacement crews
are getting a "little better" and that a third official will be
added: "You may see some of these [regular refs] want to settle,
take this new offer and get back to work" ("NBA Today," CNN,
11/19).
A FINE PREDICAMENT: Through the exhibitions and the first
eight days of the season, the league had already imposed fines of
$202,500 for fights and ejections, and issued 27 games worth of
suspensions. For all of '94-95, the league ordered $143,000 in
fines and 22 suspension games (Steve Aschburner, Minneapolis STAR
TRIBUNE, 11/18).
