NEW REDSKINS STADIUM TALKS PROGRESSING SLOWLY

Talks between Redskins Owner Jack Kent Cooke and Prince
George's County, MD, Exec Wayne Curry are "making little
headway," according to this morning's WASHINGTON POST. Cooke
last week declined Curry's request for a 90-day exclusive
negotiating period on Cooke's plans to buy public property in
Landover, MD. Although both sides have refused to get specific
on the obstacles under discussion, sources said one of the
"biggest issues" is whether the county will sell or lease the
land. Curry prefers to lease so they "could retain more control
over the project," while Cooke wants to buy the land (Terry Neal,
WASHINGTON POST, 10/19).
MCI CENTER GROUNDBREAKING: Groundbreaking for the new MCI
Center in downtown DC took place yesterday. Caps/ Bullets Owner
Abe Pollin claimed that the new arena "will be the city's
economic rebirth." The arena is scheduled to open in '97
(Haggarty & Horwitz, WASHINGTON POST, 10/19).
