NETWORK NEWS: CBS REPORTS HEAVY THIRD QUARTER DROP

CBS has reported a 43% decline in net income to $33.4M for
the third quarter vs. a year ago. Net sales rose only 1% to
$733.2M. According to AD AGE ONLINE, the company cited lower
prime-time ratings and increased affiliate compensation costs.
Despite increased sales, CBS Radio reported lower earnings due to
increased sports rights fees. For '95, CBS Inc.'s net income is
off 55% to $107.1M, while sales are down 12% to $2.5B (AD AGE
ONLINE, 10/16).
AD MARKET COOLING OFF: According to AD AGE's Joe Mandese,
there are "troubling signs emerging" in the TV marketplace which
point to "a possible downturn in overall media spending."
Despite analysts' projection that media spending was "recession-
proof" through '96, the huge demand for upfront buys has network
sales execs describing the short-term scatter market as "cool"
(AD AGE ONLINE, 10/16).
