BREWERS TAKE STADIUM BILL BEFORE A SKEPTICAL SENATE

WI Gov. Tommy Thompson and other key supporters of a Brewers
stadium financing plan admitted yesterday they "did not have
enough votes to pass the bill in the Senate, but nevertheless
predicted the bill would win approval next week," according to
this morning's MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL. Senate Majority
Leader Michael Ellis "stepped up" his criticism of the plan.
Ellis: "The ball team stinks. And now they're going to be
competitive because people can see a lousy team sitting on better
seats in a new stadium?" But even Ellis predicts "the thing will
pass." Some Assembly supporters speculated yesterday that Senate
changes in the bill "could spell trouble" for the measure. Those
changes would then have to be approved again in the Assembly
(MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 9/29).
